Under Mitch Tojian's supervision the staff put Matty in a private room of the intensive care unit, where he remained for six days. He was then transferred to a private room in a pediatric wing of Children's Hospital in Boston, where he was intravenously treated with a battery of neuropharmacological compounds, targeting the elevated hormones in his system. By the end of the third week MRI and SPECT analyses showed a marked reduction of the size of his amygdala and electrical activity in those brain sectors associated with violent behavior. The blood tests indicated normalized hormonal levels, which, with medication, would be kept in check until his body had stabilized. By the end of June nearly all signs of hirsutism had vanished. The only outward sign of his terrible ordeal was the limp in his left leg. Dr. Tojian predicted that in a matter of months he would be walking normally again. |
